Every once in a while you hear marketers talk about changing Canada’s image to be more hip and modern in order to attract more tourists, but, in the end, it’s our great outdoors that we are known for.

When we asked canada.com readers to vote for the nation’s top tourist attraction, it was the Canadian Rockies that came out on top, beating Niagara Falls by a wide margin.

It might explain why Niagara Falls is hosting a stunt this week to have a tightrope walker walk above the falls. I haven’t heard lately of anyone walking between two Rocky Mountain peaks on a high wire in an effort to generate publicity for the region.

Yes, the Rocky Mountains is a broad label that includes many attractions which could have made our list in their own right, like Moraine Lake, Lake Louise, Banff and on and on, but we were limited to eight and didn’t want to fill every available spot with places from the Rockies.

Thanks to everyone who voted.
